루이스 칸의 예일대 아트 센터(Yale University Art Gallery)에서 모티브를 가져왔다. 칸이 보여준 구조적 질서와 반복, 그리고 보와 기둥의 노출을 통해 구성된 리듬감 있는 공간 구성은 이 작업의 핵심 아이디어에 중요한 영감을 주었다. 특히 프레임이 구성하는 시각적 깊이와 구조를 통해 공간을 드러내는 방식은 본 구조물에 재해석되어 구현되었다.
이 구조물의 핵심 개념은 ‘움직임(Movement)’이다. 계단은 단순한 수직 동선이 아닌, 사람들의 흐름이 가장 집중되는 공간으로 설정되었다. 이에 따라 원기둥 형태의 계단을 중심부에 배치하였으며, 이 구조는 사용자의 이동 동선을 공간적으로 시각화하고, 이동 그 자체가 하나의 공간 경험이 되도록 설계되었다. 계단을 오르내리며 다른 층으로 이동할 때, 사람의 시선과 위치에 따라 드러나는 공간 요소들이 달라진다. 특히 4층 천창은 그리드 형태의 보 구조가 반복적으로 노출되며, 이는 사용자의 시점에 따라 ‘프레임(frame)’처럼 인식된다. 이러한 장치는 공간이 시점에 따라 다르게 읽히는 경험을 의도한 것이다. 이러한 시각적 경험을 더욱 풍부하게 만들기 위해, 프레임 형태의 구조물을 계단 주위에 다양한 크기와 각도로 반복 배치하였다. 이는 움직임 속에서 변화하는 시각적 리듬을 형성하며, 관찰자로 하여금 공간을 능동적으로 인지하게 한다. 또한, 기둥과 보의 구성 역시 층마다 다르게 드러난다. 1층에서 4층으로 올라가며 기둥처럼 인식되는 구조 요소들의 수와 위치가 달라지고, 이를 통해 이동에 따라 구조의 변화가 감각적으로 체험되도록 하였다.
마지막으로, 구조물의 꼭대기 층인 4층에서 아래를 바라볼 때 보이는 그리드와 천창은 공간 전체의 질서를 시각적으로 정리하며, 동시에 움직임의 끝에서 새로운 시각적 체험을 제공하는 장치로 작동한다.
The design draws its inspiration from Louis Kahn’s Yale University Art Gallery.
Kahn’s articulation of structural order and repetition, along with the rhythmic spatial composition created by exposed beams and columns, served as a major influence on this project. In particular, the use of frames to evoke visual depth and to reveal space through structure has been reinterpreted and realized in this work. The central concept of the structure is “movement.” The staircase is not merely a vertical circulation element, but is intentionally designed as the space where the flow of people is most concentrated. As such, a cylindrical staircase was placed at the core of the structure, with the intent of visually expressing the users’ movement through space—transforming the act of moving itself into an architectural experience. As one ascends or descends between floors, spatial elements are revealed differently depending on the viewer’s position and line of sight. On the fourth floor, the grid-like arrangement of beams becomes clearly visible through the skylight, and these structural repetitions are perceived as “frames” that shift with perspective. This device is designed to offer an experience in which space is read differently depending on the viewer’s point of view. To enrich this spatial experience, frame-like structural elements have been repetitively arranged around the staircase in various sizes and angles. This creates a visual rhythm that changes with movement, allowing the observer to engage with the space more actively and consciously. In addition, the configuration of columns and beams varies across floors. As one moves from the first to the fourth floor, the number and position of elements perceived as columns change. This is intended to provide a sensory experience of structural transformation as one navigates the vertical path. Finally, at the top of the structure, looking down from the fourth floor, the gridded skylight offers a visual organization of the entire space. It functions as a device that frames a new spatial perception at the culmination of movement, marking the endpoint not as a conclusion, but as a moment of discovery.
